In Memories of Jewish life on LI
Altough not of the Jewish Faith (i'm Catholic) I was fortunate to be raised in a family that was accepting of all faiths, and one of my favorite childhood memories is of Amityville's Jewish store keepers. i knew them all by name back then, and remember that invariably they were friendly to all, and would sit outside on their bentwood chairs unless there were customers in the shop. the names I remember from long ago: Leiblang's department store, I remember Mr. Leiblang; he was handsome as a movie star, I thought!l Later on, we had another department store, Shim's from the family name Shimansky, the news stand/stationery store, and the man who ran it; he was just "Max" to everybody. I also remember the Synagogue and the time it was defaced and our Mother telling us it was a mortal sin to deface a place of worship. My memories are of a long time ago, the 1940's and WW11 was being fought; I remember my mother telling us that the dentist's and his wife, who were Jewish would pay the ticket at the Amityville Movie Theatre of any serviceman who went to the movies! Happy Childhood Memories!
